Capital one interviews and leveling

Hey Capital One friends. I'm thinking of going to your company for a few years in pursuit of better wlb. Specifically interested in the Chicago branch, because I love that city, but lmk if that's not a good choice. I've got a few questions for you. 1. Is the wlb as good as advertised? I'm pretty burned out and just want to chill awhile... 2. What's the equivalent role for an Amazon SDE II that I should be applying for? Levels.fyi says "Senior engineer" - does that seem right? 3. How are the interviews? Any particular curveballs I should prepare for? Glassdoor says there's a case study, a technical part (leetcode easy/medium), and a behavioral part. But it also says that some interviewers like to as weirdly specific questions about stuff like the deep inner workings of the spring framework. What's the current truth of things? What kinds of questions should I expect? 4. How is the noncompete and other internal policies? I'd like to do some side projects, and potentially try my hand at making inane tech startup no. 18304628 on the side as well. I've always been afraid that Amazon will legally claim anything valuable I make due to various company policies. Are you able to work on side projects and completely own them, as long as they're not related to banking/finance? Both legally speaking and in terms of having time and energy after work. 5. Do you feel like you've learned at least a little about current publicly available technologies (cloud stuff, modern languages, libraries, and frameworks, etc.) at work? Tbh working at a big tech company, you don't actually learn these things (everything is in-house proprietary tooling), unless you do it on your own time (if you have time...), and it's a knowledge gap I want to fill without doing it on hard mode at a smaller tech company vs. easy mode at a big non-tech company. Sorry, that ended up being a ton of questions, but I would appreciate if anyone could answer even just one of them. Thanks fam. #jobhunt #interview #wlb #chicago #swe

Yes, the WLB is as advertised. Personally I think the best office is RIC, but we also aren’t in office anyway, so...

Amazon OP Dec 26, 2020

Good to hear. Is RIC richmond? What makes that the best office in your opinion?

Capital One 1234dmrs! Dec 26, 2020

Best salary vs cost of living, most appealing office , it’s floor to ceiling windows in the woods... so super serene and zen... great work environment. Most tech people. Least corporate feel. It’s the second largest office after HQ but of course HQ does a lot of finance stuff. At the time I had a 2 br 2 ba apt with massive kitchen and closets for 1600 in a full service building with gym, pool, complimentary coffee and the like. Great great place for what you’re looking for.

Op burnt out in Amazon and want a break. Is that fair assumption, else why c1 from amzn

Amazon OP Dec 26, 2020

That's literally what the post says, so not sure what you're getting at here. Is it really so unimaginable that TC isn't the most important thing in life? Plus I want the legal freedom + time to pursue some potentially valuable side projects, which Amazon won't let me do - not if I want to fully own them, at least.

Microsoft ju80lfes%# Dec 26, 2020

Just join Microsoft for a lower TC. Avoid Azure and Dynamics and you'll be in heaven compared to Amazon. Don't go to a bank.

I’m in literally the same situation as OP. To all C1 employees reading this, what’s the fastest way to get an interview? Cold application with a great resume? Or referral?

Amazon OP Dec 26, 2020

Nice, best of luck to you as well. Hope to see you in a happier place soon :D

Thank you sir/ma’am 🤝

I'm not a SWE, I came from consulting on the business strategy side, but I can confirm that WLB is definitely as good as advertised. I basically work a 10-4, with some light emails until 5. Plano Office here.

Amazon OP Dec 26, 2020

hot damn, this place sounds like such a dream. Thanks for confirming. Can you speak to the policies about side projects and moonlighting, so long as it's not in the finance field?

Microsoft ju80lfes%# Dec 26, 2020

@Amazon are you in AWS?

I see. What general domains would those teams be in?

Capital One hdyshy Dec 27, 2020

Well, our on calls are not that bad. Been in c1 since 5 years, work or observed many different teams. Believe me its very relaxing

Amazon kshbwjlv Dec 26, 2020

How much does C1 pay for L5 Amazon Sde?

Capital One Orgonality Dec 26, 2020

1. Yes wlb is amazing 2. Probably senior associate or principal associate 3. Just practice leetcode easy and mediums (yes we do ask mediums). Your interview will depend on the team you are interviewing with I believe. 4. No idea 5. my team uses very few proprietary tech but this really depends on which team you're on.

Amazon OP Dec 26, 2020

Thanks for answering all the questions! For the team-dependent bits, what areas of the company tend to be better/worse overall?

Capital One Orgonality Dec 26, 2020

I'd want to join either card or retail and direct bank. Those are the two LOBs with most money

Capital One hdyshy Dec 27, 2020

I am Senior manager here, i can refer

Amazon hogrider! Dec 27, 2020

Mind if I DM you?
