Career Advice

I have a few years of experience in software development (primarily web), but I have begun to find programming really boring and so I'm wondering if I'm in the wrong field. I've consistently read that anyone who wants to become even a decent programmer needs to basically devote all of their time to it, but I don't enjoy programming enough to do that. I enjoy completing a project and I enjoy figuring out all of the bugs, but I don't enjoy the very act of writing code or building things (I'm not that inventive). I don't *want* to spend all of my free time constantly creating another project with the next new framework or solving every problem on hackerrank/leetcode just to impress hiring managers. Honestly, I only got into the field because Accounting seemed like a lot of effort for something so boring and tedious. Plus, I wanted something that required stronger mathematics/analytical ability. I love learning about Philosophy (specifically ethics, logic, and religion) and Mathematics (granted, a lot of upper-level mathematics goes over my head). Given all of this, I have been playing around with the idea of going into Data Science/Statistics/Business Intelligence. What do you guys think? Am I just at a boring job or should I change careers? If I should change careers, to what?

Maybe it’s just your current job, you should switch and try a different one before you change career fields. Also, I don’t think many people actually like solving leetcode problems, and there’s plenty of software engineers who don’t do personal projects (myself included).

I like LC, but not normal software development

Thank you for the advice. Really? I've read so many articles about how all these developers just love coding so much that there is nothing they'd rather do. I just don't feel the same way. I'm interested in studying CS theory (like Graph Theory, Data Structures/Algorithms, Cryptography, Theory of Computation, Blockchain, etc), but the application can become rather tedious. But, it could just be that I'm bored of web dev. I don't really know for sure. However, I do know that using math/statistics along with coding to solve problems sounds interesting though (hence the other fields listed).

Yes I totally agree with above comment, it must be your current job and also lot depends on company's work culture. Try switching your job and see if that works.

Thank you for the advice. I'll have to try that out.
