Guidance appreciated! Been in retail all my life, currently a Sales Manager at a T-Mobile location, about to graduate with a MBA with a specialization in Project Management. Desperately looking for a jump to another field, problem is I make real good money as a store manager, 6 figures. Has anyine here been able to transition and ramp up to that kind of salary/pay quickly?!
6 figures is a wide range. If you are making 100k though in a low COL area, it's decent. How much scope for growth do you guys have? Also yeah as we say here "TC or GTFO."
It’s definitely decent. TC is 110K. Live in Nevada so COL is not bad. Growth is limited in the retail scope just based on geography alone. I’m aware that to move into a different position, I will most likely need to move.
Never did project management but worked with lots of them. My guess unless you have an MBA from some stellar university, the first job may need to be at some startup that will take you. Probably crazy hours and crazy founders etc. But if you survive, you can go somewhere better next job. Probably will pay less than 100k I think. But you will jump back over 100k next job.
One thing: you probably will want to transition to product management over time.
Internal transfers are a great way to break into a good role. Look at corporate roles at T-Mobile for Program or Product Management on the retail side and you should be a stand-out candidate. You should also look at well funded and emerging technologies like cloud, virtualization, iOT, and VR at T-Mobile which could be a really fun next step for your career. Best of luck!
Thanks so much for the input! Truly appreciate the advice!
Keeping in the same company may help keep your compensation up with the drastic change. Going outside it will depend on how much you can convince someone your years as a sales manager experience can apply to project or product management.
One option you have is to transition to an enterprise sales role. Some roles (not all) will be more project-based as you help companies through the discovery, sales, purchasing, implementation and account management life cycles. Having been a cell-phone store manager in my past career, I can tell you this route can dramatically increase your pay from T-Mobile.
Thanks for the advice. I have been thinking of getting into that kind of role lately. I will definitely pursue it!
Hi I’m an AE at Sprint. Enterprise reps usually have a 100k base and 100k at risk. I would assume the same for T-Mobile. An AE position is a great way to build a valuable book of business and connections that last a lifetime
Could you tell me what AE stands for please? As a Verizon rep this is super interesting
Are you an assistant or general manager? Looking forward to flourishing my career at Verizon and want to know what kind of numbers to expect. Thanks!
Hi AE is an Account Executive. It’s b2b sales not retail. Enterprise AE sells into very large accounts and is geared toward strategic sales. I hope that helps, good luck!
You don’t have to be such an arrogant prick. He is simply asking a question.
He is probably 'new' because he is arrogant
