Been working for a video game start up for about 3 years. We just landed a huge publishing deal. I just graduated from a CS degree. My capstone professor wants me to create a startup with it. A cousin of mine wants me to move to Miami to work on mixed reality applications for brain and spine surgeons. I am highly underpaid atm, I just want to get payed, move up in life, better appt, better car etc. Should i go on my own venture? Join my cousin? or dedicate my resources to getting into a big company?
Well if your immediate goal/interest is short term upside then clearly starting your own venture will not satisfy that. Additionally, pulling resources to get hired in a new, larger firm requires delayed gratification as well as the uncertainty of how you'll fare in the interviews/ where you'll end up. So immediate sure fire upside is only provided by Miami (given that the job is a sure thing and that your real income will be higher than it is now).
I'd say interview for some other roles, see what the pay is and choose between those offers and Miami. In the meantime keep thinking about your capstone project or maybe even work on it in your spare time. Once you have enough money to focus on your startup for a while and not worry about raising capital, you can do that. You'll also have enough experience at that time to come back to a large company should the startup not work out for you.
very viable option.
Be careful with this though. Starting a business with a professor can be pretty shitty when they try to control everything due to thinking they know better.
yea, noticed that. what scares me is getting funding
It's not a good choice startup with professor if they are not an advisor. Why don't you try to interview?
interview?
