Career in IPO or FAANG

In very early stage of my Software Engineering career, what would be the best option for me, joining a pre-IPO startup, or Google/Facebook ?

This is just my opinion, go to FAANG first. It's easier to get into FAANG as a fresh grad and you will learn from the best in industry (or so they tell us). In contrast to school, in the real world you have less control over what projects you work on which means you might struggle to get into FAANG later on in life if your time at a startup is a dud. Plus a few years down the road, the brand name will help get you a great offer from any startup your heart desires.

  • Total opposite take as AWS_noob... I recommend starting smaller (start up but make sure itโ€™s a well vested with growth potential - Later stage start ups being a safer bet) because you will get broader experience and opportunity to impact. FAANG isnโ€™t going anywhere any time soon (๐Ÿคž) and those companies are better for when you want to do deeper into a certain space. Bonus on if you find a start up that has strong leadership from former FAANG companies. You canโ€™t really go wrong either way but Iโ€™ve always gone by this: FAANG for depth and start up for breadth.

I like your pitch of FAANG for depth n start up for breadth. Though not sure why you think your approach is opposite to mine? I just asked op to get all the offers and then evaluate. :) ๐Ÿ˜€

Given you are in a very early stage of your career, first thing might be to get the offer and then decide?
