Been with cisco 2.5 years. My manager never asked about my career interests and ambitions. Its always about the group’s interests, their priorities, their releases and what I need to do to meet their objectives. There has never been a career option given. Is this true for everyone here or just folks in cisco?
Technically that means your manager is not a good one as a good one would help his team members to learn and grow, but realistically no one should and does give a fuck about your career more than you do, so own it yourself and take actions
Instead of feeling frustrated, try having this conversation with your manager.
You have to start that conversation. Tell him what you are interested to work on and how that maps into career objective. A good manager will try to carve time out for you to work on what you are interested in and to make it happen. It may take a couple of months though, so start the conversation early.
Every manager I have had at Microsoft has been focused on making sure that I am happy in my role and getting the resources that I need.
Welcome to shit show. My manager hadnt had a 1:1 since 1 year but got himself promoted smh
Sadly it is true for majority of managers. The phrase "you own your own career" is commonly tossed around. It is a defense mechanism from management that they only want to meet their objectives. You are an after thought. I have had a few managers actually interested in mapping out a career plan but the majority of managers I've had have never even touched this subject even when it is mandated per career discussions.
