Do you folks as engineers ever feel like pushing your career aggressively in terms of trying to get to the highest level in the shortest time seems like a marginal return as far as cost involved (extra hours, playing politics etc) meaning if I just do great work as a engineer and grow, after 10-15 years I'll still be very well off from title to compensation.
You're delusional, OP. But if the delusion is helping you, it's ok. Just like religion.
I hope people who keep dishing out this quote have actually run a marathon. đ
How great will your work be 15 years from now if you donât put in the hours needed to deliver at those senior levels
It's more of an epic or story
Non of you guys read my post I literally said you keep doing great work. The whole point is not everyone will become a VP or director or even a technical fellow, and for each one of those there are hundreds if not thousands of high level seniors. I'm saying is being a high level senior/principal enough?
Unfortunately there is rampant ageism in Tech. With today's culture I'm not sure it's possible to still be in this industry after 40. At least I'm not planning on it. So that gives you about 16 - 17 years of career to get to the top. After that it better be retirement because
Yes, I feel it's marginal returns. If I spend most of my time in my 20s and 30s pushing through career, I am gaining more money but I am losing 2 things: 1. Youth years to create memories and relationships 2. Health I want to grow at a decent pace because my goal is to have a "balanced" life in terms of money, personal relationships, health, pursuing hobbies, some volunteering, etc.
This is my thinking exactly, theres more to life as far as developing as a human being than just chasing more TC. I see a lot of people that have money and they buy stuff only to have no one to share it with so they post on social media etc.
