Interesting article from a colleague that seemed worthy of discussion here. Was posted on hacker news last night.

I admit to sometimes wondering if long-time employees were just settling for comfort and might be less dynamic than those whose moved between companies. But, in practice, company hoppers often tend to flash and fizzle out, leaving the company not much better for bringing them aboard. Thoughts?

Fuck. I know staying at the same company is the easiest way to climb the corporate ladder, but things get boring quick sometimes. Our time in this world is limited. I'd rather work on cool stuff hoping around than become complacent with money at a single company.

25 years at Microsoft here. Before that I was in school. Half my life!!
As for monogamy of the non-work type, not so much.

I haven't been at the company as long as the author of this piece but I am embarrassed at every passing anniversary and can't wait to get out. I do find my tenure here being so long is looked at as a negative in my resume. I have to defend it.

I admit that I do think less of people who've stayed in one place for too long. It makes me assume they're accepting lower pay, since it's rare for companies to give as much of a raise as you can get by hopping every 3 years. I'm sure this is not always the case.

Change is very hard for me. I once bought a condo conversion so I wouldn't have to move. That being said, I think that if you are at a good company, great pay, culture, product and interesting work, you shouldn't feel pressured to leave after three years because it's the thing to do in tech. A good company always has interesting challenges and new teams to go work with.
