What are some career options after developing for 10+years? Product Manager or a regular manager is what I usually hear. None of two are stable in the company I am in - not to mention, also hard to do if you are not friends with upper mgmt. But that is another topic. Moving to a different company is preferable. Just have a BSCS and a US citizen (if that matters). Also can take classes, etc to move out, away and up.

I recently made the transition from pure SWE to about 80% mgmt role. I did a LOT of freelance on the way and that taught me a ton about managing peers, subordinates, and customer/client/product team expectations. If you haven’t sold your services directly to a non-technical 3rd party, I’d recommend it. Doing so gets you in the mindset of those in other roles at a larger org. This preps you for management (and hiring/firing) better than anything else I know.
