Posting on behalf of my sibling: I am starting my MBA at NYU Stern. Still undecided on my career path, fluctuating between Consulting and Investment Banking. Both will be stop gaps, so it would be helpful to know the exit opportunities post 2-4 YOE in MC and IB considering my background (No tech experience till date) Background: WE- Was in Audit (one of the big four) for 5 years and am currently working in a boutique IB firm for a year, raising funds for growth stage start-ups. Edu- Bachelor of commerce + certificate similar to CPA
Tech.
He has no tech experience and it will be tough to transition to a tech role. AFAIK, Finance roles in tech companies pays a lot lower than IB or Consulting.
Would look into that more if burnout is a concern. I just started an L4 role currently in finance and making around 225 (before any equity appreciation). Way less than the banking offer I had but I think comparable to MC with way better hours at 40 a week. Also product management is an option since he’s getting a top MBA at that definitely will make more than MC but still less than banking. Things to take into consideration are that his offer will likely be better and come with a signing bonus since he will be getting a top 20 MBA and exit ops will be limited to tech. FYI no MBA just 4 yoe but I recently had to make the decision of banking vs this job so I thought I’d give my 2cents.
IB - more money than consulting
But as per him burnout will also be bad. But which would be better placed to provide him a exit into say corporate development roles (this is one thing he was interested in). Could you shed some light on it and some exit opportunities in general?
For corp Dev, IB is definitely better since you get proper transaction/deal experience. Consulting options are mainly corp strategy, bizops, PE (less for those starting post-MBA) and marketing/sales roles. Corp Dev could be doable if you focus heavily on CDD projects, but even then IBD is a much better fit (and doing lots of CDD negates any positive Worklife balance you'd otherwise get vs IB)
Do management consulting. Banking ain’t worth it. In the field currently and bunch of people have turned over.
I mean... That's the point of banking for most people, you do a couple years then exit
Your sibling should reach out to Stern alumni who are in roles that they are interested in 5–10 years from now. That can hopefully point them in the right direction.
Tbh dont even think you need to make a pit stop in MC or IB out of MBA. Maybe a summer internship. You can full send into tech right after grad
You could look into product management - I understand you have limited tech experience, but there are many companies that recruit new MBAs. Given the growth of tech it’s a solid option to consider.
This is a good option. Most pms that I worked with were fresh MBAs with little tech experience
IB is a much easier path to corporate development and strategic finance. If he decides he wants to transition to Corp strategy, strategy ops or BizOps then consulting is the way to go. At tech and start up firms the pay between those groups are generally comparable
I think core IB roles pay much more than tech. Pay in MC at big firms will be slightly better than tech.
