Career path for a new UX Designer?

Any designers here who’d be able to give an advice?

A friend of mine has recently graduated General Assembly UX Design Immersive class.

Of course it wasn’t the same as few years of work but still a pretty solid experience. She worked on 5+ projects with 3 of them being a full scope improvement of the app/website.

Now she has a pretty cool portfolio (which is really great according to other designers who had a look at it), but it still doesn’t help with job search. Most of the companies reject her during the resume review stage, only recruiting agencies reply with standard “we have tons of opportunities for you” and then disappear.

Need an advice from designers - what did you do to make sure that you pass the resume review stage?

  • I'm not a designer but I'm guessing sending some sketch or mockup for 'redesign' of that specific company's app would help? Like a cold call email to the CXO or Head of design etc

      Nope.

      As a design manager I can tell you that offering opinions void of context is a surefire way to get swept off the pile.

      What we want is simply a practitioner, someone who can get the job done.

    DM me the portfolio. Happy to review it. These boot camps are mostly worthless if you don’t have a firm grounding in design already. Projects often look the same, sound the same, etc. Some of the grads I met have been embarrassingly bad, which calls into question what sort of standards the programs have for admission and graduation.

      Completely agree. Education provides possibility to learn new stuff, but it’s up to person to use this possibility. Will dm the portfolio, thanks.

      admissions standards are garbage because they have to hit quota to at least break even. that said I've seen excellent grads come out of GA and crappy grads come out of CMU. if they have any portfolio it's usually easy to sift thru pretty quickly anyone who has potential

    Personally, I started as a marketing major and took a ux bootcamp to get into the field in Chicago but it was way smaller than general assembly. I tried to get as much experience in the tech industry as a freelance to build my resume and portfolio with actual companies i worked for and after a year i got a full time as a ux designer and got my Master’s. I worked at SAP for 3 yrs as ux designer while I got my Master’s and now finished my degree and I’m at Amazon. From feedbacks i get from hiring managers is that bootcamp portfolios look similar to other bootcamp students...also networking is very important. Since i met tons of designers through places i worked for and going to design conferences, it really helped.
