I’m a Software Engineer interested in switching to a tech sales role but I’m not sure how to market myself for the roles? Any suggestions or resources? Also I keep seeing the term pre-sales on here, what’s the difference?

  • As a Sales Engineer that made that transition I do not recommend it

As a SWE that made the switch I recommend it. I didn’t like coding, I liked architecting. The work is more fun, the people are more fun, the travel is more fun, the impact is great. You meet so many different people and build a huge network of peeps. Awesome career choice.

Making 230k with 3YOE total, sure if I stayed with SWE I could make more possibly. I’m super happy w what I have now at moving into management and C level is way easier in this role.

  • As a bi/ETL developer I'm glad i made the change bc i like being social and helping drive revenue for the business. TC is probably still higher for SWE assuming you're really good, work at faang, and love being under deadlines. Sales engineering offers a better wlb typically and good enough money for me in the Midwest where I'm happy with my choice.
Sales engineering is within the pre sales sector so it's all the same
