Anyone know of any careers that revolve around educating and engaging employees at organizations? Specifically, around topics like diversity, inclusion, and social awareness? My partner would love to enter that field and could use advice on what direction to go in. Anything from job titles, to possible people to connect with to learn more, to potential career tracks to follow... thanks everyone!

I think there’s a difference between what’s on paper and what’s reality. To get insight into hiring practices; start by working for a staffing firm. That’s a crash course in recruiting.

At one company we had a “director of culture“ who maintained brand consistency but also morale and team/company events. Looking back it made a massive difference and that company was much healthier than a lot of the toxic scenes I’ve seen lately. That was from 2010-2015; unsure if companies care now. That guy now leads an international incubator which is also pretty cool.

  • We have a corporate Diversity and Inclusion group that is a cross between HR and Recruiting. From my understanding the job of the group is to recruit and retain diverse employees, while also working on the internal culture of the company so it’s comfortable for everyone. Many larger companies have teams dealing with DI lately. There was a pledge that over 100 CEOs signed in the last year to make it a priority. Maybe start with those companies and start researching if they have specific teams dealing with these issues, then try to reach out to specific people within the company. Or attend talks if they are in a panel. It’s different at every company and the people working in the field have MBAs or are in HR or just had a passion for it. Join a meet up or volunteer with a mentoring circle to get your feet wet.

  • Go on LinkedIn and query Diversity in keyword, or use Diversity in the job title filter. Most are usually program manager or recruiting specialists.

Most larger sized companies will have training content already built in house or from a contractor perhaps. They may get new content/trainers from the same source. Your partner may become an independent trainer/seminar giver, but may not be able break to break in at large companies. Startups? Maybe.

I would chat up an hr in your “New” company to find out how they go about it, and perhaps have your good friends at other company try the same.
