I have been at Adobe as an SDE for a long time, 7 years and I am now finding it very hard to switch. I am targeting Google, Facebook, amazon etc but they all expect a very thorough knowledge of system design, which I did not get much experience in. Even the machine learning parts, I think top companies expect a lot more. For coding part I think I am well prepared. Any tips on how to practice these other topics so I can make up for the lack of experience expected by FAANG?

Happened to me while I was coasting away in a similar team after school. I eventually gave up when I realized some things were beyond me.

Is grokking sufficient for syde or should I do something in addition? Coding part I am comfortable with by now. My CS fundamentals were always strong so that part wasn't difficult, but unfortunately I don't have that industry experience in syde.

Honestly, with that level of experience if you are confident about your coding, I reckon you are probably just waiting for a FAANG offer. Either that or I am so dumb interviewers haven’t cared to ask me any system design questions in all the interviews I have failed.

What a coincidence.. exactly on the same boat. Been there in Adobe for 5 years and preparing to move out. FAANG is what i am targeting as well. Good luck!

Good luck to you as well. Can't get over the regret that I waited to long to switch but better now than never :). Let's hope we get our coveted offers soon!

  • Doesn't matter if you have the real time system design experience or not. Just thorough extended amount of preparation can offset for a lack of real time experience. Would suggest to go through system design primer repo in GitHub . And read extensively about system design online. Try to go through mock interviews free/paid to know where you stand and the format of interviews.
