Hi Blinders, Need some advice on next move. I am a 28 year old Indian male with about 300K net worth. Parents (both recently retired) are back home in Bangalore. I am an only child, my parents have an own house in BLR (4 BHK), 2 cars and about 5 CR in liquid investments, and one other land site (dont know how much its worth maybe like 1CR). Plus my mom is a former gov employee and gets like 70k a month in pension. So in terms of dependents and financial independence I am OK. My main aim in coming to the US was a sense of FOMO, I wanted to travel and experience the US, and work in the best teams with the best engineers in the world. Now close to 4 years in (plus 15 months as masters student) in the US, I have no motivation left to work or compete in the rat race here. COVID-19, WFH and a breakup last year has made me more disinterested in working for the TC or promotions etc. I am considering moving back to India maybe towards December (after which there will be a drop in my TC because of the way price at which overall stock was granted). By then I should have close to 450K ~ 3.25 CR of cash. I also look at the TC people with my experience are getting in Bangalore and I feel there is no real advantage in staying in the US anymore(given that with a 2019 priority date I have no real hope of getting a GC anytime within the next 10 years even with the best of reforms going through). I know that traffic and pollution is a headache in India but with most companies adopting WFH, I dont really see this as an issue. A few of my friends/acquaintances have asked me to join their startup, ideas they are working on in Bangalore. They sound interesting but two things concern me 1. I would like to think I am financially independent, but anything I'm missing something here? If I go without a salary for maybe 2-3 years will that cause any issues in the worst case? 2. I would like to believe my resume, with internships in FB and work ex from FB, Snap and cool tech like AWS, Go, K8, etc etc will get me interviews and great offers later on if the startup idea does not work out. Is this assumption right? Will people in Bangalore care about this and my masters degree when the time comes? I would like to believe. TC : 350K (at current stock price) YOE : 4 #india #movingback #bangalore #careeradvice
Now is the time you can do this. Your financials are sound (no dependents, have good pot to fall back on a few months). Post 30, your risk appetite will come down especially as you get into any relationships. Go for it! Wish you the best.
You are free as a bird. with no responsibilities. do what you want. and also make it a poll.
Being financially secure is a necessary but not sufficient condition for starting up. You should believe in the founders/startup team you are working with and have a curiosity for the space it's in so that it holds your interest for at least 5 years. Otherwise get a job and explore ideas till you find such a space and startup.
DM to chat about the decision and work/startups in BLR.
70k pension, what govt job was your mom in...
She retired as the assistant director of a central govt agency, second highest pay grade in central govt jobs. Her pension was actually 1.02L but she chose some scheme where you can get upto 1/3 of your pension for 10 years as a lumpsum, so recurring pension is 70k
