When you’re negotiating with an offer, is more base salary always the king? Or is there a reason you would want more RSU instead?

My experience has been that RSUs are easier to move than base salary. I would try to push for both in negotiations but understanding one will have to give more than the other. With that, I would push for more RSU to make up for the lower base. I’ve been bumped 100k (4 year vest) more on RSUs while base has moved a max of 10k.

I did get both but was hoping to get 20k bump in base. They couldn’t do any more for base so I settled for more RSUs to make up for it. 100k at 4 year vest means 25k more annually so i was happy with it

If the offer of base is already top of the range, then obviously RSU. But usually negotiate both of them

RSUs usually appreciate as they vest while you’ll be lucky for base salary to keep up with inflation.

In practice they come out of separate budgets and you want to maximize both.

It depends! If you got in when all the hype was happening, then your RSU will go to the toilet instead.
