I'm gonna be on a pretty niche team working on Hololens in SV. If my team doesn't have head count, do I have a good chance getting a return offer but for another team given I do a good job and my manager likes me? Thanks! - A worried undergrad
I heard around 80% of interns at MS receive a return offer if they will be senior standing at the end of their internship.
My winter intern class had 100% return offer rate. My fall intern class had 1 or 2 denied a return offer. Unless you absolutely don't give a fuck, you're fine
In azure conversion rate is 92%
I’ve been told that teams only get interns if they have headcount. So if you get an internship, they have a spot for you. It is up to you to earn it.
There is no guarantee that you'll have a return offer to your specific team (subject to headcount). But you are guaranteed a return to a team within the same org (assuming you get a return offer)
Microsoft always has enough headcount to hire 100% of interns. Always. No exceptions. It's a special budget.
If you’re a talented intern, Microsoft will make headcount appear. If your current team can’t hire you, another team will. Once upon a time, the manager rule was: no intern unless you have headcount to convert them to FTE, no exceptions. I believe that’s still the rule. Shine like no other as an intern and it will work out. If it doesn’t work out, you’re extremely valuable on the open market to a number of amazing companies looking for your exact talent.
That's exciting to hear, thanks for sharing!
But, be careful, when I say “shine like no other”, I mean it. Bust your butt and be the best. You landed an elite internship at a prestigious company. Be grateful and above all, don’t squander the opportunity. // former Microsoft and hired/fired contractors, left before moving into formal FTE people management
