This will sound really crazy to many, but I’ve been in the same company for 8 years. This is my one and only work experience, I got here fresh out of college (CS master) and stayed. So I have 8 yoe over one single employer. Over the years I’ve worked on many things: distributed systems, backend development, low level system programming, co authored a couple patents, wrote in C++, Java, Python, Go and more recently worked a lot on AWS and Kubernetes, so I’m generally up to date with the latest trends. I’ve never left because I’ve never felt the need to, I like the environment and the company and having been here a while I navigate the organization very easily and am well connected. My current TC is 400k (liquid) and I am at a “staff engineer” level where I’m at. However, 8 years is really a long time, so I interviewed at FB recently and passed the E5 interview and they offered me a TC of 370k (190k salary, 15% bonus, 600k equity), which obviously is less than what I’m making now. The recruiter said this is basically top of the band and they won’t offer me more and they don’t feel I have enough yoe to get an E6 offer, and that I should get this fair E5 offer and if I’ll perform well they’ll promote me internally quickly (obviously it’s just a boilerplate recruiter quote). So, is it worth changing for less TC and a potentially a more hostile environment (I hear bad things about wlb there)? I normally would say no, but damn, 8 years! and it’s not a FAANG so less prestige as well. Thanks
Don’t go for less TC. Try E6 next year and again next next year (if necessary).
You could ask sign-on if you have not already. Also, base can go higher too.
Not for E5
I spent 8 years at one company before switching. I regret throwing my youth away like that. I wish I had taken more chances, moved around and explored new places. Maybe I would have found a girl in the process instead of settling for an arranged marriage. Wife is an awesome person but I didn't find her.
What do you regret specifically? As I said, I feel like skill wise I’ve kept myself pretty updated, and TC wise the company has always been good, I’ve been able to grow my net worth to 1.5M just with my comp and market returns, which is not bad in my opinion.
Ok i see you answered later. Thanks.
I'd settle for the slightly low compensation. You should consider perks, the possible new challenges, and opportunity for growth. Usually when a company sells these stuff to you is all propaganda, but this seems not to be the case. Also, being stuck for 8 years is too much if you want to try something new. I'm leaving my job next month after a little over 5 years to start anew somewhere else with more chances of growth.
The grass is not always greener on the otherside my friend, you sound like you have a pretty stable and satisfying job that allows you to learn and grow, your TC is good as well. If I were you, I would stay put and focus on other areas of my life like religion and other hobbies, remember that life is not just about work, and we will all die at some point and cannot take 1 cent with us to the grave. If you go to a brand name company and hate your job then what now? Can you go back to your old company and request a higher salary? Don't burn any bridges with your current company cuz it sounds like they like you and your performance.
Good answer @BigRoach.
Current TC?
I wrote it in the post
How parents generation of you
?
Why are you looking to leave? There’s no reason to leave just because if you are still learning, make more money, have more independence and better work life balance at your current company. Leave for an opportunity, not just because it’s time.
Wanted more technical growth, which inevitably comes if you switch to a completely new environment
I doubt fb e5 would provide you equivalent breadth for you to grow technically. I personally think it's a wrong timing for you to change. If I were you, I'd have rather waited to gain enough experience to meet e6 bar before moving (assuming you feel you're still growing in your current role). At least that sounds closer to an equivalent opportunity, if not better. Staff to e5 doesn't sound like the same opportunity. Not to mention a pay cut.
You can think about your future in the current company, how do you see yourself there? Do you have room to grow? Do you want to go into management?

Do you really think Amazon is that bad
That is true that you could get promoted to E6 in a year after joining. I was.
Yeah but do you think it’s worth it? What would you do in my place? You are effectively trading a position with a new one with less TC and very likely much more pressure
I can't talk about WLB as it depends on team and also my previous TC was half as I came from a foreign country. But my current TC after 2 years at FB is around 550k (joined at something similar to what you mention but got a sign-in bonus)
