Chase +20% TC or stick to your words? Moral dilemma

May 18, 2021 8 Comments

I was jobless for 6 months and running out of money, so was desperately looking for a job. And found this job 2 month ago, they told me upfront they need a person who can commit at least for 18 months to this job. And told me they rejected dozen others candidates because they chose me.

I agreed , and now im here 2 months in. I kinda like the job and atmosphere, but pay a bit low.

And now i got an offer with 20% pay increase.

Should i take it? or better stay for a while here , im a bit afraid if new place might turn out to be shit.

There is no legal obligation to hold me there for 18 months, but more like professional word and integrity. Is that ok to break promise?

  • In capitalism with billion dollar corps, there is no loyalty, and no moral dilema here.

This. If they really wanted an 18 month commitment they could’ve done a proper contract. You can also tell them you’re happy to stay for the full term if they match compensation

Wrong forum to ask this question unless you seek confirmation bias from a bunch of TC chasing folks

What’s your tc? 20% is not much! If you compare after taxes, the difference will be less. Also, it depends on how much you like your current team. Keep interviewing I guess.

Disclose your new offer to your current manager and ask them to match it saying it is what fair market rates are right now.
If they match you get a 20% increase right away.....if not then you no longer have the moral dilemma anymore

Stay for least 6 months if you genuinely enjoy the work and the team. And then ask your manager for a raise and then decide. 18 months - everyone wants a long term employee just as everyone wants job security. We can all ask but we don't necessarily get it. If it were significantly more salary, then its a no brainer.
