what the best and cheap sports car for fun drives under 20k? Ok to be 10+ years old. looking to drive approximately 5k miles per year or under, mostly weekends. Thinking about M3 or M5 but skeptical with the reliability. any suggestions?
Just get a Miata.
What’s so fun about Miata? Power is pretty low, isn’t it?
I had a miata with all the fixins. The fun of it is how upgradeable it is but also you can just absolutely beat on it. I had an M3 and I was afraid to be stupid in it. The miata you can drive as aggressive as you want and it won’t kill you for every mistake
S2000
For 20k if you want fun and reliable and unlimited mods potential, s2k is best answer. Loads better than a Miata. Best engine and 6spd manual gearbox around.
Civic type R
This is probably one of the right answers, if you want reliability it's either this or the 86, a WRX is popular and so is Veloster? If you prefer German. The VW GTI or GLI (if you don't like hatch) would be my pick. They're reasonably reliable and they're interior is miles ahead of Japanese cars. Then maybe an m2, if he really wants a beamer
this poster knows what they are talking about: Here is my list, in order of increasing price: Hyundai Veloster N (new), Civic Type R (new), BMW M3/M4 (used), BMW M2 Comp (new)
Fun car is Toyota GT 86
I wouldn’t buy an e46 or e92 M3 for less than $20k. But a 135i would be sweet
If you want to go fast for less than $20k, 2003 e55 AMG is your best option. But you'll have a lot more fun with a brz or Miata.
S2000 or integra r (if you can find one)
E46 M3. Mine is a 2003 and is much cheaper to maintain than my Audi SUV.
Porsche Cayman.

You might get one for cheap, but maintenance of m3 m5 is not cheap
The trick with used German cars is buying one that has been maintained properly per schedule. The regular annual maintenance won't be bad at all if it's only driven 5000 miles per year.
There are a lot of really poorly maintained ones out there, though. The trick is to find the right seller. That said, m3/m5 is probably out of budget, even used. A good 328/128 is still a blast to drive, cheaper to maintain, and (if treated well) mechanically pretty bulletproof.
