Dogs, koalas, bats, snakes, donkeys... Everything is being sold and eaten there. But why? If you explain with poverty and survival instincts, I would partially buy it. But many countries with similar gdp per capita have much healthier habits. Is there a psychological reason or enjoyment factor of eating random animals?
The animals only seem random to you because you don’t eat them. But actually, eating ANY animal is random.
Actually that’s not entirely true. A lot of animals we eat are domesticated species. That’s not random, that’s human evolution. Humans have tried and failed to domesticate many species. And evidence is pointing to specific genes shared by these species that allowed them to be domesticated. So there may be an element of randomness in which species were domesticated, but there is definitely a pattern to the animals we eat.
Are you sure? I can think of more animals we eat that aren't domesticated. Most seafood, deer, snails (escargot), boar, bison and some animals we killed to extinction
I may be wrong, but I saw something on YouTube years ago explaining that some Asians believe certain animals like snake, dog, etc. have some medical benefits.
Americans eat snakes, squirrels, rodents, raccoons, beavers, all kinds of wild birds, bears, lions etc. Some of these wild animals could very well carry disease and cause an outbreak like coronavirus.
Base on my observation there is a "face value" part of enjoyment. Chinese people will never eat these alone. They like to brag about it with friends. It's kind of like asking will you pay $500 to eat piece of Kobe beef but no one will witness it, you cannot take and pictures and share on social media. Maybe it's a fetish, it could be like Epstein showing his captured girls to trump in a private meeting.
Yeah there are videos men brag about eating mice etc. - do they think women for fall it haha?
It's definitely weird. I've never understood it myself.
Eating random animals you say. Me: [packs bag in a hurry] Kidding aside, don’t we all everywhere have decided at somewhat random what animals it’s okay to eat. Those decisions (so far as they can be) are based more on convinces and not morality.
Meanwhile, the majority of Americans walk around infected with Toxoplasma gondi parasites that they acquired by eating pork.
Way to talk out of your ass. Atta boy!
This is what a typical legit wet market looks like. https://youtu.be/whbyuy2nHBg?t=56 Regulated wet markets exist in Singapore, Malaysia and other parts of South East Asia. Don't conflate markets with live exotic banned animals with regulated wet markets. It's NOT the same thing Banning wet markets as a whole would be like banning farmer's markets. There are people that would go hungry if regulated wet markets went away That's why it matters that we differentiate between markets which traffick banned animals and unhygienic practices from legit regulated wet markets. It's a different bifurcation of packaged / unpackaged food products In Singapore, wet markets sell vegetables aren't cut/packaged into plastic, meat isn't sliced /deboned yet etc. It's like the butcher/deli counter. Supermarkets in Singapore are hyper sterile, literally you only cut cured meats there, any raw meat is minced or pre-sliced, no butcher So the wet market is like open air butcher + vegetable sales Buying meat in Supermarkets=expats, middle-class income Wet markets/wholesalers=low-middle income + bargain hunters
This still looks like a disorganized public health hazard. This should be banned. Supermarkets aren’t *that* expensive 😂

Yes, we call those people psychopaths - they enjoy hurting others and feel no remorse.
Yes, on the Chinese Internet, majority of Chinese call them psychopaths, too. Again most of Chinese don't eat snake, monkey, cat, spider, etc.
