Bay Area housing will drop if most big companies allow this?

  • This is huge, but also has so many implications beyond WFH. Like hiring for example, why should companies hire from the US anymore when they can get equally competent engineers from Eastern Europe or South East Asia?

I’m not too excited about this yet.

@aitbfoq I am hearing that for the first time! Have seen many such cases without a fuss. Are you sure about this? Any credible source for this info would be useful.

@psysko my only source here is a conversation with my manager when we were planning on moving our engineering team from India to the US last year. He had a talk with hr about having reports in India while he was in the US and was informed about these regulations. I think it also depends on the level because senior managers and directors have international reports all the time.

  • Does anyone feel like this is becoming a dick-measuring contest between the companies? WFH until October, WFH until 2021, WFH forever, etc. What's next, you don't really need to work?

Yeah, nothing's improved in video quality from the days a 2.5mbps cable connection was something to brag about.....

Get real. The ubiquity, maturity, ux, and functionality of conferencing apps have all drastically improved from even the early 2010's.

Laptops too. Only "businessmen" would get laptops back in the day, external mics and cameras only, and fucking *wifi b* was the new hotness. No 3g.

The world of the post-dotcom crash is so vastly different to today's tech scene to say there's only been minor improvements in audio & video quality is utterly disingenuous.

Agreed, but that mindset is today. In the future it may not be the case. There’s also no shortage of cities that are LCOL by SF standards that have hundreds of decently paying tech jobs should all else fail. The other side of the equation is that as companies show willingness to hire outside of SF your competition increases without necessarily a decrease in COL for current mortgage holders and contracted tenants.

There are plenty of tech jobs in Atlanta, Raleigh Durham, Denver, Austin, DC etc. I lived way more comfortably making 120k then I am doing so now making 200k because my costs have gone up exponentially. Housing here is ridiculous.
