I'm all for (leashed) dogs at work, but this seems irresponsible if you even glance at the statistics on dog bites. The dog hasn't been directly aggressive towards anyone, but it's pretty well established that these dogs can snap at the drop of a hat. Any ideas on how to politely ask this person to keep their dog at home?
Stop with the breed is dangerous bullshit. It’s the ownership of the dog and training. And statistically small purse and lap dogs are more likely to bite and be aggressive. And no they do not snap at the drop of a hat. There’s always a pattern of behaviors that lead to the incident that you read or hear about in the media. And are you even sure it’s a Pitbull? Most people mis classify bully breeds in general.

I think what my msft friend is arguing is that the propensity of bad owners to own dogs like pitbulls is higher than say golden retrievers. If you hold owner even, I bet the statistics will look different. With that said, I’m not a fan of pitbulls either
I think the confounding factors missing in those stats are traits of the owners e.g nice people have nice pit bulls. Anyways, your best bet, if the official policy is dogs at work, is to simply be honest with your coworker and tell him/her that you are afraid of the dog. Your coworker will likely empathize with you and take steps in the future to ensure you feel safe.
Just looked the previous comment and see how he reacted when people mentioned they don't feel comfortable with pitbulls.
Get bit, sue, retire. Nuff said.
Stop being such a pussy and get a guard dog of your own if you're that scared. The way you've pre-judged your coworker's dog to be ready to bite you at the drop of a pin is offensive. You can move desks or work from home yourself if you're uncomfortable rather than expecting your coworker to cater to your whims.
"The only thing that stops a bad guy with a dog is a good guy with a dog," huh? First time I've heard that argument. Anyway, this type of person rght here is why I'm asking how to bring it up.
Man is everyone at Oracle all pissed off like you
Bring some wieners into work
I have a pitbull and my dog is such a sweet angel who would never hurt anything. If anything he is fearful of the unknown and super shy. Trust the owner that he knows the temperament of his dog and wouldn’t risk bringing an aggressive dog to work. If you are that afraid, go buy some dog treats and give him some so he gets conditioned to liking you. It’s would be incredibly rude to tell the owner to not bring his dog based on the breed and could potentially cause conflict.
Thanks I might do this
Don't do this, if the dog likes you it'll spend more time with you and increase your chances of being bitten
Most pits, especially if mixed with labs or something, are very sweet dogs.
If he clamps on to you and won’t let go, remember to stick your finger up his butt. No clue what to do about the dog tho.
Thanks for the laugh!
Just tell your manager about the concerns u have. Workplace should feel completely safe to WORK.
