I'm not sure what level of comp I should target to account for COL adjustments. I'm a new grad and I live in Columbus, Ohio. My starting salary is $90,000, that's pretty much the total comp. I pay about $1,000 a month in rent. What should I target for Seattle and for the bay area so that, after rent and other monthly expenses, I take home roughly the same amount? I have to rent somewhere that allows my girlfriend and I to live there and is dog friendly.
Honestly, you might have a hard time beating that anytime soon. You'd need to make something like $140k in Seattle and almost $200k in the bay area.
I like my job and city. It's just that I want to move to the west coast while my girlfriend and I are young and dont have any children. So we wont have to worry about homes and schools. My current employer wants to move me to their headquarters in San Francisco, and my boss said he will raise my pay. However... I have no clue what to ask for to adjust for how much I make here.
Your rent will be 3000 dollars and your state taxes will shoot up. 150k in bay area is equivalent to 90k there.
Maybe look at apartments in those areas and adjust by the net then divide by 0.6 to account for taxes. So if rent would be 2k a month in Seattle then 12k/0.6. you could try and sneak in a little raise in there as well.
It's just a really rough estimate. You can adjust however you see fit.
Easiest place to start is to ask the manager for the salary range for positions at that office.
I moved from Ohio to Seattle. Cost of everything is waaaay higher out here. Rent will run you 2k for a 600 square foot one bedroom, and everything else- food, groceries, etc. is generally more expensive. If you're in software development, you'll generally find the quality of developer to be higher here, too, though the need is huge so finding tech jobs isn't extremely difficult, especially if you have experience. Just be prepared for a very high cost of living if you want to live close to your job. I totally recommend it, though.
Man 90k right out of school with 1k rent sounds awesome. You should stay there and avoid the headache 😅
