I’m really worried by the effect that forced diversity quotas will have in general quality of products and team morale. Also, I believe it’s important to be coherent and vote with your feet if necessary. Is there any relevant-esque company that is not forcing diversity quotas? I’m cool with, and actually support, blind screening. But forcing a % or hiring and promotion isn’t something I’m willing to support with my work. Thanks!
OP, We regret to inform you that unfortunately we have to temporarily disable your account as blind's diversity accounts fell below required percentage of 48%. You're welcome to try new portals while we stride to improve our diversity and focus towards growth mindset and innovative users. Diversity drives innovative posts. Alibaba. Tencent. Baidu.
"You can have any ethnicity you want, so long as it's Chinese" is their hiring philosophy
No it's not. Chinese bosses just don't like getting shit or getting challenged. It's a difference in culture. Chinese people just are willing to harder. Western tech people want 40-60 hours weeks while making 300k. Chinese people say - I'll give you 500k but you are owned by the company. I don't care if you have kids or a family How many times at microsoft do people say - oh I gotta pick up my kids or I gotta leave early today for whatever reason. Right or wrong - if we're talking meritocracy, Chinese companies only value meritocracy. Low bases with very high variable comp. e.g. The year WeChat launched, the product and Dev team on that got 500% bonuses of their bases. So maybe base of 120k, but got 600k as a year end.
No large western company can escape this in the media sadly. If you are a white male you are their target. Gotta be 10x better than the rest or you won't even be considered. I know first hand.
I think the NFL doesn't embrace diversity. Try there
OP, care to share some examples of afformative action around you, and how it makes products worse?
Intel's CEO basically said if two candidates, one white and one black, are equal on paper then the black one will always get hired. Why not flip a coin??? Oh because reverse racism and diversity quotas.
Intel's hotshot divisions ADAS AI 5G are hiring for skills only. If you happen to be diverse that's icing on the cake.
With insane demand for top engineers there should be no shortage of companies to move to
You sound like you'd fit in perfectly at IBM
I have heard FB doesn't lower the bar.
Just focus on hiring or recommending for hire competent people and everything will be fine. Good people come in all colors.
Although I agree that’s the way to go, sadly some big companies are enforcing quotas. See https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2017-01-10/some-tech-companies-are-trying-affirmative-action-hiring-but-don-t-call-it-that . Previously we were asked to favour women or minorities only if we found 2 candidates similarly qualified. Nowadays though, managers’ reviews and bonuses are tied to artificially RIF’ing, promoting and hiring for “diversity”, just to put an example. So good people are actually being let go just because of this. That’s not something I’m willing to support -not to mention as a minority and father of 2 girls I’m a bit offended by the condescending nature of this.
"I don’t think tech has embraced affirmative action because they’re really married to the idea of a meritocracy.” What? I thought maybe they wanted quotas because they think it would help offset unconscious bias in hiring. Unfortunately, that is not it. They don't care about merit.
