So far, as of my onsite interviews last year: - Google: option to use laptop, without running code for coding questions - Airbnb: use computer and run code for coding questions - Bloomberg: use computer and run code for coding questions - Square: use computer and run code for coding questions - Uber: solve coding questions with whiteboard only - PayPal: mix of whiteboard and computer, without running code for coding questions Can anyone comment on Two Sigma, Citadel, Jane Street, HRT, FB, LinkedIn, Lyft, Twitter, Amazon, Microsoft, Oracle, Snapchat, Pinterest, Roku, Netflix and other top paying companies?
I went to Uber onsite twice and they have a round where they expect you to execute one coding question on your laptop.
What’s the issue here?
AWS had a round with a laptop and a remote interviewer. It was an awful experience with a garbage laptop with what seemed like a 1280x720 display and a trackpad with a nonfunctional left click. If given the option of using that or just doing whiteboarding I’ll take the whiteboard.
Amazon allows it but you need to ask early in the process. They won’t volunteer it. I’d also remind them a few days before.
Splunk has the option of laptop or whiteboard. I chose whiteboard
I would always go for whiteboard, given the option. When I am interviewing others, I'm more concerned in the coding logic, not if someone remembers the different syntax of the different collections APIs (as an example). I will tell people to go with an api that makes sense to them, if they do start to consider tjis. Doing interviews on whiteboard encourages both parties to consider the logic, and not the line that syntax checker has marked in red.
True, but it also introduces the risk that the interviewer reads the code incorrectly. This could result in passing a candidate who should have failed, or vice versa.
Jane Street allows you to write code in an editor that’s projected up on a TV, you won’t have to run things. Two Sigma incorporates a computer for some of their questions, you will actually end up running code with tests, and they have skeletons already made depending on the question.
And I should say the whiteboard is still a large part of both of these interviews.
I’ve noticed compiling code has been a part of almost all my trading firm interviews (5) in contrast with my two FAANG interviews.
For stripe and lyft, I suggest you bring your own laptop.
