Been having difficulty even getting interviews at other tech companies. What are some that value the experience from Cisco?

VMware hires from Cisco
VMware is slightly better than Cisco, but it itself is struggling and counted among old timer companies. But recruiters respect VMware engineers much Better than Cisco. Truth is as long as you can show marketable skills needed by your dream company on your resume, your current company may not matter much
Same experience. Cisco has zero brand value in hiring world
Add to that the dilution of Senior grades these days. PE in Cisco is the newer Sr TL
Did you worked at Cisco before joining fb ?
Man let me tell you my story. I got internship at Cisco and much better companies visited our college later. I didn't see any energy in team members and declined ppo. I got good offers during placements (companies visit college and thus only interview performance matters not much resume). I applied off campus and lol everywhere I applied I solved all problems and got rejected from everywhere. I have still one more internship left which I can get in some faang level company and company I will be joining has good brand name. Do you think I should remove Cisco from resume after those experiences ? I learned something from internship and thus removing completely would be bad idea i think. What you guys suggest ?
I wouldn’t remove Cisco from my resume if I were you. What if the companies you interviewed at had limited spot and found someone who’s better than you at something? That’s a possibility too. Most of these kids have no clue the impact of Cisco’s contribution to the internet as we know it today. I can spend a whole talking about Cisco’s contributions to RFCs on routing protocols such as BGP, OSPF, IS-IS etc. Shaming employees of a company whose whole existence has been about improving the internet is plain shortsighted.
+1 to what Citrix said. It's a choice. The fashionable and lucrative thing today is SaaS applications and cloud infra. Could be social media or anything. It's a choice. At least in India, you can earn decent TC compared to many others if you are a good performer in Cisco. But if you are interested in FAANG, and crave even more tc, nobody stops you because you are from Cisco. You got to build that skillset though to market on your resume
OP and anyone wanting help this topic, DM me to chat. I can help based on personal experience. I don't want to criticize my former company in public, but I also understand the public perception. Plus saying things here may possibly reveal my identity
Why not? So that others would go through the same issue over and over? The experience we're all having, is the exact reason you should say it publicly.
Come on, there's always ways to anonymize your words.
HPE Aruba has hired multiple former Cisco employees, from developers to executives.
I would say HP has about the same reputation as Cisco.
That's why I believe startups are the solution
I would say referral to some top company or getting some experience in startup would be good idea. Cisco definitely has 0 brand value.
Lmao there's people who've made the jump to FAANG from Cisco. Hell, people from no name startups have too.
Yep. I think thread is on getting interviews and especially in India. US is exception. The number of PPL moving to FAANG from Cisco, especially after 8+ yoe is very less in India
What is so different in the kind of job done in cisco India for you to think of them to be affected?
I worked in Cisco for 15 yrs before moving to faang. Amazon is full of ex-Cisco folks..some interviews (startups) had a perception of Cisco==coasting and I had to explain how every team in a big company is different. While there r several coasters in Cisco, I team was’nt in the category….
Are you in US or India?
am at cisco roller coasting!.
This is India specific problem. I worked at Cisco US before and never faced issue with getting an interview call from FAANG.
Yes it is an India specific problem
I have had experience working at Cisco. Given that they don't even respect their own interns to give them return offers, I'm not surprised other companies having zero respect for Cisco. Also I've interviewed with more than 20 companies in the past 2 months. I'd say the only feedback I got from 4 companies about my Cisco experience was mocking and making jokes about it. I was not offended and continued the joke and I got an offer from all 4. I personally didn't put the focus of my resume on my cisco experience.
did you removed Cisco from your experience altogether?
I didn't, but I shortened the description, and Cisco wasn't the first experience on my resume since I worked in another startup after that. Did you try startups?
