Company hire best engineer for all position? Is that good?

With the recent layoff of quora where USED TO have the best engineer in the valley BEFORE, I notice that most of company try to hire strongest engineer for all position doesn’t do well. Meanwhile, company who hire the rock star engineer only for important position and ok engineer for the rest is actually doing pretty good. Amazon is the best example of that. What do you guy think? Which company do you prefer go to work for? Update: I’m surprise that a lot of people on Blind cannot read English correctly so I have to capitalize the key words here

I’m pretty sure the people who’ve commented on this post so far could build Quora in an evening.

Quora used to be the college confidential for high achieving undergrad kids to hangout with. Tough interviews conducted by IMO/IOI/ICPC winners were never a recipe for success. See imo.im, memsql, quora, palantir, dropbox, affirm, medallia.
