How is compensation at Blizzard? Specifically for Senior Artist/Animators (level 1 or 2) and above? What are the tiers? (senior level 1, 2, then what?). Are there opportunities for growth? How are bonuses for devs? It seems like a great place for devs from what I have heard, but so damn expensive to live there.
How much does Bethesda pay? I heard gamedev pays pretty poorly in general and works you to the bone
I think it’s about average for gamedev. I think it’s probably way below a place like google, especially for engineers. I’m a senior artist with 15 yoe, close to half of those at Bethesda. I have shipped over 10 titles in my career. I make around 120k. Plus bonuses, which have been getting smaller the past few years. I used to think that my TC was pretty good, but now I’m not sure. I’m trying to figure that out now. It is a pretty good place to work. Good people, not a lot of crunch depending on your department.
They pay notoriously low. They think "the honor of working at Blizzard" and a volleyball court somehow makes up for it. There are senior levels and then principal levels.also lead but leads and principals tend to be different roles. Bonuses this year were cut company wide by 50% due to rapid and unsustainable growth in the previous few years. They do not offer stock to anything below director. That said, lots of people like working there. Great benefits, good company having a rough patch. Morale is kinda low. People come here and stay for ten years which is rare in the industry.
Our growth was to meet Dev demand which didn't happen because we stopped shipping games.
You're not wrong. Still was unsustainable.
I don’t know about art positions but for actual tech positions... take the salary-only component from a normal tech total comp, go one level down, and then take 10% off.
Ballpark? Not sure what a “normal tech comp” is?
I was researching houses around Irvine and it seems crazy expensive. Even in nice towns 15-20 miles away. Do a lot of Blizzard folks own homes near the office? Seems like you would need to be in the 150k - 200k salary range. Is that feasible at Blizzard for Senior lvl 1 or Senior lvl 2 positions?

I just want to play WoW all day to be honest. Do they have a role for this?
QA 😋
Lol sure. QA at blizzard is closer to SDET at any other game company.
