Hey Blind, I find myself in an interesting position. I'm not growing in my current role and didn't see any teams with open headcount I was interested in. So I started interviewing. A few weeks ago, a team I've long been interested in got headcount so I reached out and its a fit. This team checks all my boxes: mostly backend work, strong alignment with stakeholders, relatively senior team with folks I can learn from. However, I've just received an offer from Qualtrics that blows my current TC out of the water. Team fit seems pretty good from what the recruiter can tell me and I actually like the Qualtrics product and market quite a lot, but I hear rumors that their internal engineering process/stack can be weak and the SAP acquisition is a big question mark. Dropbox: TC: 270k Pros: Team fit Company Culture Lunch and Dinner 5 days per week I still believe in the mission and think the company has huge upside. Con: TC is lower. Qualtrics: TC: 325k Pros: Fresh Start Like the product Liked all my interviewers Sign on (35k) Con: Team Fit is more unknown, but still seems good from the description of the team? Lunch 3 days per week, no free dinner Rumors of weak internal tech stack? SAP acquisition? What would you do?
What can you accomplish with 325k that you couldn’t with 270k? I think going with the environment you know that you’ll love 8 hours/ day Monday through Friday is worth giving up the 50k for an unknown.
Absolutely nothing changes except for my ego. I'd just save more money.
FWIW there seemed to be lots of turnover for a while. that might be better now but might be worth checking into. They've had explosive growth along with being acquired by SAP which can both strain a company culture.
Great WLB and cool tech stack at Qualtrics. But , don’t see the hardcore eng culture like amazon and Microsoft. Though that has started to change since a lot of those folks have joined Qualtrics . 325K looks like a L5 offer to me . YOE?
Doesn’t seem like worth the move. Dropbox definitely carries more weight on your resume than Qualtrics. However, do get some other good offers if you decide to move.
Dropbox’s culture is incredible (don’t know about Qualtrics) as are the benefits and WLB is really good. I prioritize those things over pay, also the extra $55k won’t really make a huge difference but the risk of being in company with the wrong culture could be present.
OP, do you see yourself becoming IC3 soon?
I am IC3, just way underpaid.
That sucks. And I can understand how you feel. I wonder if you like your future new team, would it be possible to get Dropbox match your new offer so that they close the pay gap and you can still enjoy what you like about being here.
What is your years of experience?
I have been there and did the bad decision of going for more comp.
