In most threads about negotiating TC, the advice is to have competing offers so one can negotiate. My question is that if we are in the interview process with various companies, we won't necessarily get offers from them around the same time. So, let's say I have an offer from company 1 now. But I'm waiting on offers from company 2 after having the final interview. Company 3 had just set up an interview with me for next week. So a potential offer from company 3 may take a few weeks. With this hypothetical scenario, do I keep company 1 waiting till I get offers from company 2 and 3 which may take a few more weeks? How long can I keep a company waiting before accepting or rejecting their offer? And do I tell them that I'm waiting on another offer before making a decision?
That is something you need prepare during the discussions prior the interviews. Tell them that you are interviewing at multiple locations and that you are expecting offers.
So in your experience, do companies give you timelines, such as you have to make a decision within the next 3 or x days? My question was more along the lines of if companies wait a certain amount of time for you to accept of reject their offers
You have to set expectations. Tell them you are still interviewing and waiting on wrapping up the interviews before any decision.
