Competitor Offers & Walkouts
Accepted an offer in Amazon as SDE on retail side. Still have to go through background check etc, which I am expecting to take another couple of weeks. Wondering when would be a good time to tell the manager. Next sprint planning is about to begin, and I feel the manager could use this info to plan and not overcommit work for the next sprint for the team. I dont want to be walked out right away though( not before everything is final) and risk health coverage for family. I am not sure if Microsoft considers all groups of Amazon as competitor or if walkout only applies if you are going to AWS. Please share any recent experience of being walked out for accepting competitor offer. Thanks New TC : 250 ; SDE2 ; YOE : 6.
The company doesn’t care about you. Reveal as little information as necessary to not leave on bad terms. To put it another way: If the company decided to lay you off today, your manager would do that without question, and the sprint would be similarly impacted. They’ll figure things out. Don’t do anything that can negatively impact your life for the benefit of a corporation.
You are only obligated to give your two week notice with your intent to leave. You do not need to share any other information. If you’ve accepted the offer and don’t believe the background check will be an issue, let your manager know now. Avoid dealing with counter offers.
This is bad advice. Keep your offer to yourself until you’re prepared to be walked out; ie. there are no more hoops to jump through and you have a start date. Give your two weeks notice then. Two weeks notice is a courtesy not an obligation in any case.
It’s not an obligation, but it is appreciated. I would guess it’s fine for OP to start at Amazon two weeks after their background check clears. If things line up that way, just wait until all is good to go.

Leave at the beginning of the month so that your insurance is valid from Microsoft for the remainder of the month. It will allow you to pick an Amazon start date on the last week and give you several weeks of vacation (take it; Amazon provides a shit # of vacation days for your first year).

Yes, but there is COBRA, which is retroactively applicable so you only pay if you need it. Makes it less of a concern to have a small gap without insurance.
You don't have to worry about health coverage, you'll have COBRA. But if you don't want to be walked out, just don't tell them.
Do not tell them you’re leaving for Amazon and they won’t walk you out. It is very much standard to withhold that information. The managers will usually know that’s exactly why you’re not telling them.
I don’t understand this. Why would you want to work for 2 weeks when you could instead not work for 2 weeks but still get paid?
