Hi,

I am expecting SWE offers from 4 companies next week: Confluent, Facebook, Google, and Snowflake (in alphabetical order).
Confluent is offering L4 (senior SE) in the Kafka team.
Facebook E4, I interviewed as infrastructure SE and will go through their bootcamp after joining.
Google, L4, and offering teams in Google Cloud
Snowflake, IC2 (may uplevel to IC3), in one of their core storage team.

I am really liking the work and teams at all these companies. The people and work seem nice at all the places and I am thoroughly confused. *I don't have concrete TC numbers from these, will update them in the post next week but I am hoping to get around $360K+ (my current TC) as TC per annum.*

Do people have any insights or things I should look into before making a decision? Any help would be appreciated as I am thoroughly confused.

Current:
YOE: 4 years 4 months
TC: I am at level L5 at Rubrik (similar to Google), $215K cash component + equity. I have no idea how I should add equity as it's a pre-IPO company. Based on the price we are getting at the private market, my TC would be $360K per year. All the companies are down leveling me from my current level, should I be concerned about it? I had a good performance at Rubrik and got promoted early.

Several wise mentors early in my career gave me the same advice: your career grows fastest when you’re at a company that’s growing fast.
I’ve absolutely found that to be true in my career. The times when I’ve been at a company that’s growing fast have been the times when I’ve grown the fastest — in terms of responsibility, experience, skill, and comp.
If that idea resonates with you, and if that’s what you’re looking for right now, then I think Confluent will be the best bet of the companies you listed. It is certainly growing faster than FAANG. And from the inside, I can tell you I think we’re growing even faster than SNOW, as we’re pioneering a new category (data in motion) that our customers can’t seem to get enough of.

The Kafka group is great. It’s the beating heart of the company and where a lot of the highest skilled distributed systems engineers in the world work. I’m a PM there now (switched from Eng a few years ago). If you want to talk more about it - DM me! I’d be happy to answer any questions!

At 4.5 yoe, you're close to being qualified as a L5. Wait 6-8 months and interview again for L5 at these companies (or push them for L5 now).

It'll be a faster climb to L5 that way than coming in as L4 and trying to grow internally (2-3 more years).

Confluent is offering me L4 position as per their ladder which the recruiter mentioned is same as Google/FB L5 (my current level too). @confluent people, is that correct? All other companies Google/FB/Snow are offering me equivalent to Google L4 which is definitely a down level.

    • Yes, Confluent level starts from L2. Google and Facebook start from L3. So Confluent L4 maps to Google L5.

Why would accept a downlevelled offer when the TC won't exceed your current TC?
    Tired of paper money?

yes, I will most probably won't switch on a lower TC than current but thinking that level downgrade might be okay as I am still early on my career. Looking for change mainly because I want to work in a new environment with a new set of people.

As such I am happy with my current team, both work and people wise, couldn't ask for better set pf people to work with. I have been working at Rubrik for 4 years now and I want to explore other companies and get diverse experience.
