Hi all, First blind post. I have an offer from Cerner Corporation in Kansas City, Missouri and from The Options Clearing Corporation in Chicago, IL. The offer is for a new grad software engineer. Cerner's base salary is about $8k higher than OCC's offer adjusted for cost of living (all calculators except smartasset gives this). OCC has a bonus program but Cerner does not. Applying the bonus, both salaries are similar. I don't have a preference of one industry over the other, I feel I would get to learn a lot in both industries. I feel the culture is more relaxed in Cerner but OCC says that there culture is changing. I like Chicago more than Kansas City but am still very confused as to which I should pick. Any help appreciated.
Base salaries: Cerner - $69000/yr The OCC - $78000/yr The OCC has a 10% bonus program which can increase
Cerner is great for retirement.
If you like Chicago go there
I would pick Chicago for future opportunities
Health tech is a GREAT place to be and Cerner is definitely in vogue right now having recently won the big VA and DoD contracts. That said, Kansas City is kind of a lame place to live relative to Chicago or any of the big coastal cities. Life outside of work will be an important consideration if that's something you care especially about
Considering the future, I would recommend opting OCC over cerner
What makes you say this?
Cerner does not have value long term value in the resume. Pick Chicago
What is your current TC? YOE?
Still a senior at uni. Graduating in may. Have had internships but this will be my first job.
Either option doesn’t sound too appealing imo. Apply to more places. I also had an offer from Cerner 10+ years ago. Glad I didn’t take it!
Occ
Any particular reason why, apart from it being in Chicago?
Yes I used to work in Kansas for 2 years. It is a good place to raise kids but for a new college grad, Chicago would be much better for you. Also you will come across more chances in Chicago since there are bug tech companies there. I would go for OCC if i were you.
