Considering the offer primarily for career growth. i think getting in as l5 will be muxh easier than getting in as l6.

But for promotion, is one expected to get > MA is every review cycle ?

how difficult is the process ? folks in similar situation - would you say interviewing as l6 is easier than getting in at l5 and then working towards l6 given all the things that can go wrong - project, reorgs etc

Most engineers will not reach 6. If you are in the minority that will, four years is very reasonable. Expectation is skewed on more recent cycles.

  • I6 is basically ‘above the average full time experienced eng,’ so you have to stand out in some way and usually lead others, but it doesn’t necessarily take that long - if you already operate that way can be 2 years, 3-4 is more likely. But it can also never happen.

I don’t think it’s super easy to interview for 6 either though, you basically have to be a tech lead of a team and be hired to continue doing that for a generalist or systems eng.
