Sep 27, 2019 89 Comments

My tc in india is ~140k usd, i am getting around ~280k in sf on l1, i believe life will be much better in bay area
I am sick of so many people everywhere in india, pollution and plethora of related things.
I am planning to move with my wife, she is a data scientist with reputed firm here, how difficult is for her to get a job in bar area with EAD?
Also, any general comments on people who have moved, how is life in general.

Your wife will find it very easy to find a job here. It's never a bad idea to explore.

With that tc in India u don’t have to mingle with plebs.

Create ur own mini city and employ all the minions u need.

Edit: more I think more I like the idea of starting an empire like “despicable me”!

I was starting to get depressed reading another thread about TCs at 25.

I read this comment and it I feel better now. Keep up the good work (humour), Roku.

I have $350 and my wife’s tc is $150. With two kids going to private schools we barely meet our ends. And the reason they are going to private schools is because we cannot afford a home in a good school district for public schools.

    • sure, you’d be struggling to have ends meet if you are paying for a 2M house you bought at 10% down because you couldn’t afford a 3M house. This is how you end up taking your own life.

500k and just making the ends meet? You got a spending problem.

Are you crazy? With that package in a city like Blore I would have never ever thought about moving out of blore!!!
Reality check, bay area is no lesser than being in Blore it's hugely crowded, has traffic (slightly lesser than Blore) & extremely competitive(rat race continues even here).

Yes. With that pay in India, you should live like q king. Except the traffic and commute kills u. Not to mention daily pollution intake while commuting. There is no life in blr, just somehow reach office, and back home.
Your savings will be more in US. Not in % of income, but in overall. You dont need to live in SF. Just stay outside, take caltrain.

1 hr traffic in bay is sitting in your car, following your slow lane. 1 hr traffic in india is constant honks, over crowded vehicles desperately trying to cut each other, thick smoke from trucks, 10x higher stress.
When you and wife are working, u buy a home, kids go to school, u just cant control whr u stay. You will compromise on your commute.
Also, how do you go out on weekends? City is still full on weekend.
Bay area is pretty chill in non-peak hours

That’s much better than almost all of the US outside of the bay, nyc, Seattle and big tech... Seems like you’re killing it in India and 280 in the bay isn’t going to go that far comparitively.

Wow....you are earning 1cr INR. What do you do man to get this kind of salary in India?

If I earn that kind of money I would never ever think of leaving India.

Also, you are in top 0.5% in India with that salary. If you move to SF with $280k will be in top 15-20% in Bay Area. This means you are downgraded.

    I would never move.

American dream use to be a thing back in 90s or early 2000s, not anymore mate. From what I read, you are extremely blessed to be living and earning that much in Blore.

150k in Bangalore? Don't move to SF. At all.

Anyone who is "doing well in India" will really hate moving to the US on any kind of work visa, for tech work. It's a significant drop in self respect and quality of life.

I've worked in India and the US. Ping me if you want.

Congratulations on your success, you shouldn't even be thinking about moving to bay area for anything less than $750k of TC.
