I’ve been working in Apple in global supply team for 2 years in CA. My partner’s hometown is in Texas and we’re thinking moving to Austin considering also the low COL there. Just wonder does Dell has a lot of suppliers in other time zones to call at night or in extremely early morning? What about work life balance in Dell? advice welcomed.
Apple is great, why would you ever consider Dell? Did they give you a Director level? Or is this just pure WLB concerns
I was at Dell about 4 years ago before moving to Amazon. Some positives about working at Dell is good flexibility. I used to work from home for nearly five years and a lot of my co-workers did not work in the office. I even knew a team member who worked from home in Hawaii. The downside of working at Dell is lack of job security. The last two to three years at Dell was hard for me because nearly every week I would wonder if I would still have a job. I was told on two different occurrences that I was going to be laid off luckily I was always picked up by another team before my final date. However it's very distracting to always be worried about your job and it's difficult to focus on your tech work if all you're thinking about is taking care of your family. I didn't feel I could do good work if I was constantly worried about job security. That aspect made it extremely stressful for me.
Thank you! Is it in the hardware team?
All the teams that I was on were software teams. I would think the hardware teams would have the same type of stress. Dell is involved in a very competitive spaces. The hardware space for Dell is very low margin meaning there's very limited room for error this I believe translates into stress on the workers. A lot of my former Dell coworkers no longer work there.
I'm really curious why you want to switch from Apple? Apple if I'm not mistaken is going to be hiring 15,000 people in the Austin area. Apple will have more employees in Austin than Dell will.
That’s an option but now there’re not a lot of jobs matching my skills. Didn’t you see some Apple guys in Dell? Quite a lot of my colleagues now are from Dell/IBM
When I was at Dell I don't think I ever encountered anyone who had worked at Apple. However here at Amazon I do encounter people that have worked at Dell.
You’d better check the COL in Austin proper. It’s getting pretty high compared to the rest of the state.
The significant cost adder in the Cupertino/mountain view/sunnyvale is housing cost. If plan to buy a normal single family house here, you’ll probably need to pay a total cost of $1.5M. Putting down $500k down payment, still need to pay 8k a month mortgage, insurance and property tax combined.
Work life balance is good. Entepreneurial culture is bad. Do your job; and your good. Most still work there 20+ years so certainly not the work experience like one would get at an innovative company where you might spin out something
Depends - in supply chain, yes, I'd agree that's a fair representation of the demographic. Outside supply chain and maybe server, I'd disagree. There *are* plenty of lifers, but there are many, many folks who are 10 years or less - particularly with the acquisitions they've made since 2008.
I worked in supply chain and it was good until late 2000s . Cutting edge . However the culture, quality of people , bureucracy and work quality has all degraded . Between Apple and Dell hell no is the answer for Dell

Avoid teams with only Chinese or Indians especially with a Chinese/Indian manager
Also wondering what other companies in Austin are good for hardware professionals
Did you switch?
