Lately thinking of pursuing MBA as i don't want to continue as an swe in the long run. Is it worth doing MBA (like branding) and how will it help to get into product and marketing roles. Also wanted to know how much tc difference will it make compared to staying in a dev role. Or should i stay as an SWE and leetcode my way up to achieve higher tc? Any insights or suggestions would be really helpful. TC: 200k YOE: 7
Average SDE in the bay earn more than average MBA from a top 20 school. After an MBA, average student start at 170-230k tc.
An MBA May make more in the long run.
True, but devs can reach 300-400k way more easily. If you truly want to reach C level executive then MBA + eng degree is a powerful combo.
I would suggest reading up information on Poets and Quants, it’s a good resource for MBA prospectives. Secondly, it sounds like you’re targeting tech so make sure the MBA places well into tech. H/S are always safe bets. I would argue Wharton is as well. M7 is good for branding but some schools are stronger in tech placement than others. Here’s a good synopsis on Wall Street Oasis (keep in mind it’s very biased towards finance and against tech): https://www.wallstreetoasis.com/forums/why-tech-is-overrated-for-mbas-and-why-banking-is-underrated Overall, you should be a strong candidate in T10 provided your GPA is > 3.6 and your GMAT is above 720.
thx malta, but i'm too paranoid about investing my time into studying for gmat rather it is easy for me to leetcode and have a guaranteed job. what if i'm unable to achieve the required score after multiple attempts and by the time i lose all the time and effort and go nowhere. And how difficult is it to prepare for gmat while being a dev that requires 30-40 hrs/wk of ur time.
Well it sounds like you have to decide what you want to do with your life. What’s the reasoning behind the MBA? Is it for a different job you really want? Or is it simply higher TC? If the latter, get an MS in CS and Leetcode a lot. MBA won’t help. Also, there’s a lot of people working 60+ hours a week who prep for GMAT. It’s doable.
Look into financial independence and early retirement if you don't want to be an swe forever. Why do people default to MBAs lol. That's not the best reason imo to choose an MBA.
If you get into the top 10-15 then makes sense otherwise not so much.
ty for the response. How hard it is to get into a top 10 mba program i know it will be 90%'li gmat, but i'm just scared to spend time studying gmat rather i would leetcode. just confused on where to invest my time.
Depends, there's a lot difference between schools in top 10. Stanford and Harvard are the top and very hard, then Wharton and MIT are pretty hard. The rest of top 10 is not hard as long as you have a 720+ gmat and write decent applications. Also, applying to 4-5 of them gives you a high chance to get accepted at least in one of them.
