What have we learned from netflix, nobody except tech bros cares about your tech stack and how much you pay your senior engineers. At the end of the day in the streaming war content is king, not whether you load your video 0.4 ms faster. That’s why Disney that pays its engineers 1/3rd of Netflix is still taking their lunch
Netflix used to have content. Now nobody has content, too much fragmentation. Only torrents have content.
It might be worth mentioning: I'm pretty sure Disney bought its streaming platform. The devs they have in their own company didn't build much right? https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Disney_Streaming_Services
How about equal parts eng culture + content. Netflix was able to get some of their biggest hits out of their original content because of their engineers. Not just cash wise and assured pushed effective marketing but House of Cards starring Spacey was produced because they recognized the overlapping viewership. And were the first to recognize intros and give the ability to skip them. Essentially their engineers are making and directly effecting their content.
Not saying Eng culture doesn’t matter.. just not nearly as much as the content. Obviously your product needs to be functional and have a decent UI and performance but outside of that the content is what brings in users
Damn did I not just outline three specific examples engineers doing just that. I love specifically how they have engaged their engineering team around their core mission not just as behind the scenes builders. @op this seems like less of a question, than an axe to grind, to be anti engineers.
Diminishing returns at some point…
The world’s best recommendation engine will fail if there’s only crap content to recommend.

Anyone else have a bloated belly until a huge fart deflates the belly back to normal?
You need both to win.
true but content is still king. People will wade through the worst possible engineered experience to see highly coveted content
Torrents you mean
