What is the cost of living difference between Chicago and California. If I earn 100K in Chicago then what is the equivalent pay in California. How does Home ownership , transportation , kids daycare , utilities compare for both. Sorry I am asking a very broad question so all feedback is appreciated! Thnx!
There's tons of COL calculators online you can use to give yourself a rough idea
$100K in Chicago is roughly $250K in SF accounting for higher taxes and cost of housing. This is for an early 30s no kids couple looking to rent in the city.
Do you own a home in west coast. Then it’s good to move
No I don’t own a home in West cost..I own a house in Chicago
Just came here to helpfully add “a lot”. If you’re talking about the Bay Area I would aim for at least 2x depending on how comfortable you want to be and if you have kids. If you’re talking about Seattle, actually still aim for at least 2x if you have kids.
Don’t do it! I moved from Chicago and I’m dying to move back. 😩
Within West coast can varies by doubling
