Blind community need your thoughts and wisdom

Got an offer from a company with a role I'm interested in and accepted the offer.
I told my current employer about it and now they immediately mentioned they will promote me in a week plus beat the new offer by 15% and gave me the flexibilty to move to Bay as I mentioned it was the reason I considered the offer.
I'm lost...don't know what to do,

1. Shall I move on with new Employer as it is
2. Shall I re-negotiate with new Emplyer and ask for better numbers
3. Shall I take the offer at my current employer
4. Shall I negotiate more with my current employer

#engineering #software #re-negotiation

TC: 120K
New TC: 160K + 25K sign on,Bay
Counter TC: 185K + 20K bonus one time,LCOL if I opt to stay at current place

No, do not accept the counter offer, because that will leave you at risk of potential retaliation or at least discomfort. Move on to the new job with their offer as is, be happy and then later figure out your next move. Congrats!

  • I'd stay at current company in that scenario unless it was a toxic environment. Everyone says taking a counter means the company will look to replace you but I disagree. The fact they're offering you a strong counter at all means they realize how valuable you are. You likely have leverage there and they almost certainly will not let you go or hold it against you for staying as long as you have good relationship with your boss and skip level manager.

If you are ok with the work and career path at your current employer, take the counter and stay in LCOL. 185K will go a lot further in LCOL.

If you see better long term prospects at new employer (you tagged Facebook, Apple, Google, is it a good project/role in one of them?), then ignore the counter, thank them for it, but move on without burning any bridges

I would also lean to going FB: you will probably learn more, if you perform well promotions are faster than at other large companies and having FB will open doors for you in the future. Refreshers will bring you up again on the TC.

WLB might take a hit so if that’s a consideration (family time), think it through.
