I'm currently level 5 Data Engineer at Facebook, TC around 350k. I received an offer from another big company for ~400 TC + 50k signing. My manager says that if I stay at FB, they'll promote me to IC6 this July with "high probability". I'm a bit tired of my current work and ready for a new role, but the opportunity to be promoted to six is tempting. Also, my initial FB equity grant has expired, so I'm not sure that the promotion will fully bridge the comp gap. Any thoughts/feedback appreciated.
How many years have you stayed at Facebook? Why don’t come to G as L6+?
around 5 - interviewed at G recently and they put me at L5
You will know they are working on your 6 promo at least 1-2halves in advance. Usually no 6promo with 1half.
How easy is it for 5 -> 6 and 6 -> 7 promo at Facebook?
Not sure, relative to other companies. 5 is a "terminal level" meaning some ppl stay there their whole career
But Facebook, there's some 32 months in which you have to get to L6 from L5 otherwise get piped. Doesn't this apply nowadays?
Make it a poll stay vs leave
My vote: leave. You have already shown your cards to upper management who will remember that you are looking outside and committed to growing within Facebook.
If your manager really wants to promote you and keep you , they would do it right away and not wait till July. Promotions happen outside of yearly cycle nothing new in that. Don’t fall for this.
not at facebook. the rare out of cycle promos are for university recruiting and new hires if they are wildly misleveled
Guaranteed higher tc and level better than a potential one in 4 months Don’t doubt your manager is acting in good faith but things could go sideways in calibrations. Even then, you’d have a crappy old initial grant vs a big fresh one at a higher level.
Yeah never accept, there’s a reason you want to leave and follow through.
This is not even a counter offer. Just usual carrot and stick management bullshit. Leave asap.
^this
“High probability” = means I’ll try but don’t hold your breath.

The job market is absolutely brutal right now
Don't accept counter offers . That's the universal suggestion.
