I got an offer for non-tech role at Coupang as a direct hire and Google as a TVC (~12 months). I’m not sure which one is more worthwhile in terms of career growth. Help evaluate offers please. Scope of work is similar but Coupang is reporting to senior executive vs Google is reporting to director/ Sr director level. Thanks! YOE: 6 (Admin/ Finance/ Ops role) COUPANG Location: Mountain View Base: 100K Stocks: 10K ISO Team: Engineering/ SW GOOGLE (TVC) Location: Mountain View Base: $43/ hr with potential for OT Team: Product Marketing - AR/VR | Google Assistant
Coupang.
Can you help me out with your reasoning? Just based on security of the job or do you have insights about culture there? Any other factors? Appreciate your feedback.
TVC -> FTE is not easy. Do not make the decision based on that. Treat as a contracting job and nothing else. If you are fine with that go ahead. ( TVCs are great and I see them no different than FTE, but just setting expectations).
I was in a similar situation. I picked tvc at google, did not convert. Still opened many doors and looks great on resume. No regrets
Did you end up going to Indeed? I worry for closing the gap for next role if I don’t get converted. But I’ll definitely try my best if I choose Google.
What options did u have over which u selected tvc? What did yiu get after that? How did the other companies treat u?
Converting to FTE from TVC is not easy, so definitely don't make the choice based on hope of conversion. I think I would still choose Google, but just saying.
Thank you!
Updated the teams/ org if it helps! Thanks everyone! :)
I’ve actually been at FB for contract role (extended from 6 months to one year) prior to Amazon as full-time. I wasn’t able to convert there or else I would have stayed.
Also dont converted FTEs from vendors people hover around the bottom of their respective TC bands? Not sure if its worth it, and even on resume its not very good as you need to explicitly mention you worked as a vendor
@pozbuw Thanks, that is true. Coupang is a Korean company and I’m not entirely sure how the culture is. I do know that I’ll need to work longer hours due to meetings in Seoul/ China, so I guess the higher base “covers” the extra time worked. HQ is based in KR so I will need to be available some evenings/ night time.
$43/hr is roughly $86K/year and probably without benefits or with really shitty ones. How are you planning to survive in Bay Area with this pay? Coupang, leetcode, and start interviewing in 6 months.
^ I want to mention this is a non-tech role in the admin/ ops/ finance realm. So I don’t have any coding background for leetcode. :(
Then do whatever it takes for your role to find better paid position
Consider your Pay and it's California which is at will. Both can send you home with COBRA and that's it.
Make sure you won’t be stuck in a TVC-only building. We have started moving TVCs out of the FTE buildings and from what I’ve heard, the TVC buildings have little perks (no cafeterias, no gym, no Techstop, cramped areas, etc).
This should be illegal.
Hmm, yikes, how would I even know before going there? I only know the team (stated in the edited original post above) and that it’s in Mountain View location.
Join coupang. The culture is good. The work can be stressful but rewarding. You may have some occasional late meetings but your schedule can and will be flexible to accommodate for the night meetings. Plus you get options to purchase. Coupang will likely IPO in 2020 and you’ll have a nice windfall of cash :) We are taking all the good ideas successful in the US and not reinventing the wheel to implement in Korea where we are highly successful and continue to grow.
> We are taking all the good ideas successful in the US and not reinventing the wheel to implement in Korea Transition: we are copying American sites for Korean market. Reminds me that business plan from the Silicon Valley TV show: "Chinese Reddit, Chinese Facebook, ..." ;)
I don’t think Coupang is trying to hide it. They’re successful in their market and that’s what matters.

Google TVC, and use your relationship development opportunity with the executives to find opportunity to convert to Full-time.
Thanks! How easy/ difficult is it to convert? I’ve heard TVCs can be treated differently than Googlers. How would you describe the culture? I’ve worked at Amazon before as FTE and didn’t enjoy my time :(
There's no guarantee you can convert, but if you are enterprising, you can build a good relationship with your directors and express your interest in converting. Culture is good, and we remind people to be conscious to each other and treat each other's as equals. Sometimes TVCs are excluded from some events or comms due to legal/policy reasons. I'll bet it's better than amazon.
