Coworker Compliments

A married male coworker peer of mine compliments my physical appearance about once per month, using language such as "you look cute/pretty today." Is this common workplace behavior in your experience?

If you feel comfortable about, it’s appropriate. Otherwise, it’s inappropriate.

Sounds like he's trying to get some tail on the side. Most married guys don't talk like that to other women.

Not if you're his manager or above.

“Pretty” is borderline. “Cute” is not okay at all. Also “flirtatious” = inappropriate in the workplace IMO

I was actually thinking the other way around. Cute is ok and pretty is not

EATON Mi8c2 Aug 16, 2019

I just feel like pretty is more “formal” than cute, cute seems definitively flirtatious to me

Why.do you use periods.in inappropriate.places?

Facebook crockstar Aug 15, 2019

Lazy people using iPhones that convert double spaces into periods?

I see it as a compliment. It depends on this guy’s culture and his intention. It doesn’t matter if the guy is married or not. If his compliment bothers you, you can let him know directly that you don’t feel comfortable

If that's the only thing he does I don't see an issue here

The fact that you are asking means you think it's inappropriate so just tell him if it bothers you and move along 🙄

It doesn't bother me. If anything, I probably like the coworker a little too much, considering that he's married. I was just curious to get some neutral outside perspectives.

Ohhh the plot thickens

OP, do you like him? If yes, go for it.

EATON Calista Aug 16, 2019

As soon as he tells you he’s separated/divorced, sure, go for it

If it makes you uncomfortable then you need to tell him. Doing it directly face to face is best but if that’s not for you, ask your manager or HR for help. Explain the situation, that it doesn’t make you comfortable, you don’t know how to frame it in a way that won’t damage your business relationship, and any other relevant details. Good luck
