Questions about Bloomberg and NYC

Joining Bloomberg very soon. Had a few questions. Is everything done and managed through the Bloomberg terminal? Meetings etc? Any recommendations on how to get familiar with it? Any tips during onboarding?

As for NYC, I'm looking for apartments near the office (preferably within 15 mins walking distance max). I don't want any roommates. Any recommended areas to target and which sites to look up apartments? I don't care about luxury, just want something as cheap as possible but private (no-coops).

Old TC: ~90K
New Bloomberg TC: ~250K
YOE: 4-5

  • Be aware wlb is team dependent and not the majority

    • I’ve found it hard to not give into the team culture of working (and being responsive) outside of regular business hours, feel like my teammates would low key resent me for it since everyone else is working harder

    • That kind of mentality exists at every company I have been at. You gotta set your own boundaries. It’s tough for a month and you’ll feel that pressure but once you get used to it it becomes a lot easier. It’s hard to get to that point since when you start on boarding, you’re trying to ramp up and make a good first impression. Once that ramp up is done and you’re comfortable, then you should start to add life to WLB

  • The office is in midtown. Surprisingly not as expensive as other areas but loud and lots of tourists. Upper East might also be a good option.

Get ready to use software with dinosaur UI that feels like it was built in the 80s and 90s for everyday tasks. Teammates are generally smart and nice and WLB is great though

A decent midtown east studio is probably close to 3k these days. Midtown east is pretty soulless and corporate, mostly high end retail and restaurants and offices

Oh every big tech company I imagine has tons of legacy and proprietary tech. And in general any new company you join, you'll have to learn their way of doing things so I don't mind any of that as long as the work is interesting and I feel like I'm learning and growing.

How good WLB are we talking? If you had to put number of hours you work per week?

Do you have any specific locations in mind where I could get a 1 bedroom under 3K near the office?

Do y'all Bloomberg folks get west coast style free food?

  • You’ll get used to the terminal fairly quick. For some teams the only thing you’ll regularly use it for is to check email, calendar, and view tickets (not like jira but for operational stuff). Midtown is boring I wouldn’t recommend living there if you’re going to be doing stuff outside of your apartment often.

What's boring about it? What's missing that's in the rest of NYC? Does Bloomberg use Jira?
      Apr 15
    • It’s very corporate, lacks soul and character (for example a place like Greenwich has lots of character). Yeah bbg uses Jira (most teams do at least it seems like)
