Currently EM2 managing a small team, talking with a cruise recruiter, what’s the level system for management track? Was told there is EM1, EM2, Sr manager, director +, how does it map to IC levels? (Industry wide L3/4/5/6/7 etc) TC 500k without including refresh. YOE: 10
I heard that the Senior Manager from Amazon was hired as VP of Engineering at Cruise. You should expect no less.
Hmm, senior manager from amazon come as senior manager at Uber, Uber sr director join as cto at cruise, seems a consistent pattern, looks I’ll need to reconsider my expectations
There you go. That VP is now SVP, he gamed the system by writing “head of ...” on his LinkedIn when he was a senior manager at Amazon. There is no position as “head of ...” at Amazon, but immature leadership at Cruise bought it.
Cruise senior level is a joke. New grad and people with 10+ years experience are also Senior. PhD two years out of college are senior EMs. You talk to these people and realize how well positioned we are to be successful.
Cruise levels used to follow the same system at Dropbox: SWE: IC1 for new grads and IC2. After that: Sr level with IC3 + IC4 then it ends at Staff as IC5. Now they get rid of those and have a super wide Sr band which contains 70% of eng workforce. Only 20% is SWE and 10% is at Staff or above. I myself would map Cruise Sr to L3.5, L4, L5 @GG To op question: EM1 = Sr. It's much easier to get to EM2 than to Staff
Can confirm all of this as well
More like 40:55:5 jr:sr:staff in me experience
Thanks (800), this is very helpful!

Senior at Cruise starts at IC3 (L5 Google), which maps to EM1. From there it's a 1:1 mapping upward. Source: I'm ex-cruise.
Thanks! Why left?
I have seen 3 year out of college being Senior Engineer at Cruise. Google L5 will never happen at that exp.
