What is it like to work at Cruise Automation. Currently: Amazon sde1 145k tc Cruise: IC2 210k tc Both are in Seattle
It’s a good company, very engineering-focused. Still finding its way, which means opportunities for leadership as well as growing pains, so it’s a double-edged sword. It’s not a walk in the park, we are still a startup so you will be working harder than at Amazon. But it’s also very rewarding when your team meets its goals.
I curious about one thing. Are most managers honest about things. Say like, my current manager bullshits about promotion; will just exclude ppl from design review to get pass blocker.
It depends on which department you’re looking for a position in. From what I hear, some managers are garbage. In my department they are pretty good.
Offer Break down?
How was your onsite interview?
I just did an on-site last week at cruise SF for a c++ generalist position on a planning team. It was pretty standard for SF interviews I've been to. 1 behavior with the engineering manager for the team you will be on. It consisted of beahaviorial questions like tell me a time x happened. 1 design based question. Create an algorithm to take an unprotected left hand turn. 2 coding questions. 1 was about creating a memory pool and being able to request a block to store data and free blocks back into the pool for somebody else to request. The second coding question was implementing parts of minesweeper. I got no offer, but expected as much since I ran out of time and didn't come up with a complete answer to either question. I got rejected via email with "while there were some strong points in your technician onsite our need for seniorty is very high right now. We will not be moving forwards." Basically it means I suck with 13 YOE, 3 of which in a technician lead position at a no name east coast tech company.
AV team?
Heard polarized opinions about cruise. Any one from inside to share more details?
Refer to my post above. Just my opinion but in general I would not recommend the company.
Which team, you work with, which location?
YMMV, depends on the team. I think unless you’re a super high-risk taker and tend to be lucky in your choices, I would say don’t come. Too much instability.
Don’t come to Cruise. Obviously a personal opinion, but it’s a shit show here right now.
Wow. And I thought Cruise, Waymo and Aurora were on top of the self driving game....
Define shit show.
