Cruise offer - Need guidance

Hi there, I have a verbal offer and expecting a formal offer from Cruise for an IC4 level role in Engineering. Tried to read some reviews here and I am confused if its specific engineering teams that have serious burnout or is it company-wide? I read that the Engineering culture is toxic in some ways but I want to know if its changing? Should I take up the role? Thanks in advance #cruise #cruiseautomation #cruiseoffer

Depends on what you’re looking for, but all I can say is wlb is very bad here. If you’re looking to grow...sure, but be prepared to get burned out within 2-3 years

Are you open to submit a referral?

Quantcast hmj891988 OP Jan 14, 2021

Thanks for your response. Has the WLB been like this always or did it start after Covid? Any signs that the management is taking any efforts to change/fix the culture/image?

Cruise gxix85 Jan 14, 2021

Prepared to work on weekend and stay up late...

Cruise jackass_v2 Mar 10, 2021

We work 25 hours a day 8 days a week, because the BDFL said so.

SAP getrollin Jan 14, 2021

How is the pay? Recruiter has reached out for SWE role.

Quantcast hmj891988 OP Jan 14, 2021

The initial offer is very good. I am still negotiating.

Do you mind sharing the numbers? DM me if needed.

Waymo lowballs relative to Cruise. ATG folks bailing on Aurora are seeing that.

Google Ee4life Mar 8, 2021

Its better to be stable at way mo than get paper money and sanity at cruise

Highly depends on team. The burnout is less hours worked (though expect to work 10 hour days), and more "leadership pivots 180° every few months and you have to trash all your work and start fresh" Initially Cruise would promote from within which means a lot of the senior leaders are not leaders. The recent managers are actual... managers. For this reason every team experience is different. But generally the higher up you go, the more likely it is that your boss is a technical guy with fewer people/leadership ability.

Google Lesley2876 Jan 15, 2021

I am confused. Isn’t Cruise working on self driving techs? How can leadership pivots 180d when the entire company is working on such a single goal?

Changing direction every few months is also the norm at Lyft L5. Most projects lead straight to trash bins.

If a product on Amazon is rated 2.8, would you buy it? That's the current rating of Cruise on Blind. WLB is team dependent. My hours are OK but IMO there are many pointless meetings and AIs that create a lot of stress and unnecessary work. It's not a "chill" culture. It's a culture where you do work out of fear. SLT is trying to change it; but it's like politicians calling for prison reform when nothing really changes in the prison cells.

Quantcast hmj891988 OP Jan 14, 2021

Thats a really nice way to put it. Honestly my first filter is 4 Stars and above, but here, since I am getting a considerable jump in Comp, I wanted to understand if the rating is widespread or for only a few teams. Thanks for your response. Is the 30% bonus paid in full or is there a catch there? If I consider working for 50-60hrs/week, I would be making potentially the same comp as Cruise offers.

Cruise knnbccb Jan 14, 2021

Bonus paid in full at end of year.

Is this PaaS? Infra is sh*tshow.

Cruise ooooooq Jan 18, 2021

Core infra or ML infra ?

Intuit basKar Jan 15, 2021

Hi op, can I dm you?

Cruise bsbsbsb Jan 16, 2021

The company is not stable and overvalued. We let go bunch of people last year and more of it may happen this year.

Cruise Crashlead Jan 16, 2021

not stable and overvalued - agree. I doubt we'd have a big layoff this year though. Enough people are leaving by themselves already and we still have $$$.

I have been with Cruise for a while(2+ years) and I personally enjoyed working here. I worked on exciting projects and grew a lot by working with bunch of smart folks. Every opportunity has it’s pros and cons. So, Cruise(or any company for that matter) is no different. I personally(again it can differ from team to team) never had issue with WLB. Cruise is one the company who takes survey seriously and they started promoting WLB culture. However, I want to also share few things: 1) FAANG/ tier 1/2 Public companies: Low risk, Decent Pay, great WLB, slower growth, good if you want to grow in very specific domain and learn about processes 2) Cruise or large startup: Moderate-High risk, Decent pay, great upside, fair WLB, moderate-high growth, good if you want to have a feel for startup and decent cash 3) Early stage startup/small startup: Very high risk, below market pay(in cash but you might get more equity), very high upside, poor WLB, high personal growth, good if you want to learn how startup work and want to take on very high risk. Hope this helps you make a good decision. Good luck!

Cruise djzbeh Jan 16, 2021

> Cruise or large startup: Moderate-High risk, Decent pay, great upside, fair WLB, moderate-high growth, good if you want to have a feel for startup and decent cash Are you kidding? I don’t even want to comment on this here - just go to Cruise if you want to be never promoted in life. Also, there is no IC1-8 thing at Cruise anymore. We only have four levels - junior senior staff principal. Which recruiter are you talking to? It seems they are lying to you - first signal of what a shitty company it is.

Cruise glfc57 Jan 16, 2021

Personally I've found a lot of growth opportunities at Cruise. I also believe that the culture is moving in the right direction despite not starting in a great place
