Managed to get a software engineer offer from Cruise, Pinterest and Thumbtack and I'm wondering what would be a good move for someone with 2 yoe. I haven't been given any compensation numbers yet and I'm hoping to get more clarity on those this week. Cruise seems to be working on pretty new tech and would have interesting problems to solve. However, they seem to have scrapped the RSU + PSU model in favor of bonus + equity, which is slightly worrying to me. Pinterest on the other hand has a decent chance of going for an IPO in the next couple years and all the engineers seemed pretty smart. Thumbtack also seemed to be solving nice problems in the local services space which has pretty good potential. Any views on preferring one over the other until I get some numbers ? Also, any ideas on what would be a reasonable compensation to expect from the 3. 2 yoe
Among these three I would pick Pinterest, especially with 2 yoe.
Actually numbers would help.
At this stage of your career, choose the opportunity that gives you the most learning. Comp between these options won't make any life-changing difference at 2yoe
I would NOT join cruise since a lot of large companies are already working on self-driving technology. Unless you think Cruise will get acquired, I wouldn’t join them. Unless, of course, you’re all about self-driving tech. You can always join another self-driving team with your experience at Cruise. I have a friend who works at Thumbtack and he enjoys it a lot. Ask them if they still do that thing where every few months you take on an engineering role that is different than your own to gain a more well-rounded experience. THAT I think is wonderful and will expose you to things early on in your career that you may like or wind up not liking. Pinterest is fine. I’m not a big user myself so I’m not as enthusiastic about them as others may be. They seem great, though.
Cruise is part of GM. It's already acquired, the equity with the RSU+PSU model was bankable and paid out in cash. Because of the GM acquisition they are probably second only to Waymo in the potential resources at their disposal.
Cruise is already acquired by GM.
Pinterest. You got a great first impression (which I got as well and is still true!) Plus the company has major sex appeal even if most of male silicon valley engineers don't understand the product.
And also missed 2017 rev targets. And also doesn't have a business model (ads are hypothetical. It hasn't actually gotten it to work)

Congratulations on the offers! As someone who just had an initial tech screen with Pinterest last week, I’m a little biased towards Pinterest. I was really impressed with the quality of the time I spent with one of their engineers during that screen. The challenges they’re working on seem extremely interesting and the scale at which they operate boggles the mind. I have a feeling you’ll grow great in that type of environment.
