An Interviewer was trying to shame me for not trying out his feature of a giant product before the interview. At a very large company, I was sent a link in their resources for how to set up an account and try for free. I tried it last night, it makes me log in thru Another service, and that service makes you put in your payment info. I said F it and tried, but it errored out for paypal and my credit card. So i just watched some youtube videos instead on the product.

After the interview i asked the guy about his blog post about building a feature for the company. I then asked him if it was hard to build a specific part of that feature. He snapped back at me “you did not set up the demo product and test it out, if you did you’d know that it doesnt do that”.

Like fuck, man, sorry i didnt read your blog AND try out your specific feature, myself, after entering my credit card and all that just for a single interview. With people who arent on the team im interviewing for.

I told him that it errored for me on billing and that I tried to set it up, and he said he would note that as a bug, but i felt like he just thought i was lying. Either way, it was very toxic.

  • You made the assumption the interviewer is an ambassador for the business, and would say “let me drop everything and sort you out”. Ideally, the discussion could have gone differently. The interviewer is a DB.
Hope your offer and your decision to join are not pegged on this single experience.
PS: if there was homework involved, try it out ahead of time. Interviewer should have contingency in case you were not setup and ask to reschedule

I did my homework on my question to the point of discovering what blog posts the developer made and what features he wrote and came up with a question about that feature.

I guess, since i was asking a question about a specific feature of their application, i do think it makes sense to have played with it before the interview. Thats fair.
Just seems far fetched to assume everyone who asks about your work has tested it?

    • OP, you were always right, this is not about your reaction, this is about interviewer reaction. Except here, interviewer has a Yes/No button and none of us know how this experience may influence that decision.

  • Next time, inform people in advance if you have any problems with homework or such. That will avoid all the confusion. 101 stuff.

I dont think im going to randomly burt out “i couldnt test out your product because the billing wasnt working” at the start of my interview. How would you approach that?

Good. Is this the behavior you want to see in your coworker? If not, then easy answer
